OSHA Awards $10.5M in Workplace Safety and Health Training Grants

department-of-laborThe Occupational Safety and Health Administration has awarded $10.5 million in one-year federal safety and health training grants to 77 nonprofit organizations nationwide. The grants will provide training and education for workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance and prevention of safety and health hazards in their workplaces. They will also inform workers of their rights and employers of their responsibilities under the OSH Act.

OSHA’s Susan Harwood Training Grants Program funds grants to nonprofit organizations, including community/faith-based groups, employer associations, labor unions, joint labor/management associations, colleges and universities.  Target trainees include small-business employers and underserved vulnerable workers in high-hazard industries.  2016 award categories include Capacity-Building Developmental, Capacity-Building Pilot, Targeted Topic Training and Training and Educational Materials Development, with grant amounts ranging from $80,000 to $526,500.

Recipients of 2016 training grants span a wide range of organizations, including the Garment Worker Center, Los Angeles, CA; the Steelworkers Charitable and Educational Organization, Pittsburgh, PA; the Building Industry Association (BIA), Waipahu, HI; the Worker Justice Center of New York, Inc., Rochester, NY; the Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs, Washington, DC; and Asian Health Services, Oakland, CA.

The training grant program, which has provided training for approximately 2.1 million workers since 1978, honors Susan Harwood, a former director of the Office of Risk Assessment in OSHA’s health standards directorate, who passed away in 1996.  During her 17-year tenure with the agency, Harwood helped develop OSHA standards to protect workers exposed to bloodborne pathogens, cotton dust, benzene, formaldehyde, asbestos and lead in construction.
