OSHA Places Company in its Severe Violator Enforcement Program

OSHA SVEP ProgramOn February 5, 2013, OSHA cited Grede Wisconsin Subsidiaries LLC for 28 health violations, including three repeat violations, for exposing workers to crystalline silica dust and other hazards following an August 2012 inspection of their Browntown iron foundry, which employs about 200 employees.

OSHA has proposed penalties totaling $274,500 which stem primarily from repeat violations identified in previous inspections for exposing workers to respirable dust hazards where dust containing silica was above the recommended exposure level, unguarded equipment, and failing to apply lockout/tagout devices to equipment during service and maintenance.

OSHA also found 24 serious violations which are cited when there is substantial probability that death or serious physical harm could result from a hazard about which the employer knew or should have known.  The range of serious violations included lack of permit-required confined space regulations; not following hazardous energy control procedures; not providing employees information and training on hazardous chemicals; and several violations of respiratory protection regulations and the procedures required under OSHA’s respiratory protection program.

As a result of the inspection, OSHA has placed Grede Wisconsin Subsidaries in its Severe Violator Enforcement Program which focuses on recalcitrant employers (fancy language for employers that continually ignore OSHA’s rules) who endanger workers by committing willful, repeat, or failure to abate violations.  Visit OSHA’s website for more information on its Severe Violator Enforcement Program.
